Prairie Lake

Prairie Lake Sign The City of Holton operates Prairie Lake as a public water supply and as a recreation area. The lake was constructed in the late 1940's and is approximately 43 surface acres while the park is about 80 acres. Prairie Lake offers opportunities for camping, fishing, picnicking and other recreational activities.

General Park Rules

  • Camp fires are only allowed in designated fire rings. Please do not leave fires unattended.
  • Ice skating are not allowed.
  • Swimming allowed only in designated area
  • Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the dam or rip rap areas.
  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed on lake property.
  • Firearms are not allowed in the park area.
  • Fireworks of any type are not to be shot, fired, or discharged in the park by individuals.
  • No hunting allowed on park property.
  • It is unlawful to damage any park property.
  • No littering, please.
  • Picnic areas are to be left in a neat and sanitary condition, picking up any trash or refuse.
  • No signs are to be posted in the park without authorization.
  • The City of Holton is not responsible for unoccupied campers.

Fishing Rules

  • State fishing rules and regulations are to be observed at City Lakes.
  • All largemouth bass caught that are under 18 inches shall be released.
  • All channel catfish caught that are under 15 inches shall be released.
  • A creel limit of 2 largemouth bass and 5 channel catfish per person per day may be taken from Prairie Lake.

Boating Rules

  • No wake boating only.
  • All boats must be equipped with a U.S. Coast Guard approved life preserver for each boat occupant.
  • Jet skis or similiar watercraft are prohibited on the lake.
  • No boats may be launched or allowed on the water when notice is posted at the boat docking area.

Camping Rules

  • Camping permits are based on an overnight stay.
  • Camping units may stay for a maximum of 14 days at any one camp site. After 14 days, the camping unit must be removed from lake property for a minimum of 24 hours before returning.
  • Campsites may not be reserved.
  • Unoccupied camping units are not to be left overnight.

Other Information

  • Operating Season - Prairie Lake is open for all activities from March through October.
  • Hours of Operation - Park hours are from 6:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. (No actvities are permitted on the water from 11:00 p.m. - 4:00 a.m.).

Camping Permit Fees

  • Sites with electricity - $10.00 per night.
  • Sites with no electricity - $8.00 per night.
