The Water/Sewer Department consists of 8 full-time employees who are responsible for the City of Holton's Water Treatment Plant, Wastewater Treatment Plant, water distribution and collection system and PWWD #18 water treatment plant. Dennis Ashcraft is the Water/Waste Water Superintendent. Ashcraft has been with the City of Holton since 1984.
Water Plant
- Built in 1947 Upgraded in 1981
- Capacity: 1 million gallons per day
- Source: Prairie Lake (40 acres) and two wells
- One stand pipe: 300,000 gallons and one elevated 750,000 gallon storage tank
- Class III plant
PWWD #18
- Joint effort between the City of Holton and Rural Water District #3
- Built in 2002
- Source: Banner Reservoir (535 surface acres)
- Capacity: 2 million gallons per day expandable to 3 million gallons per day
- Utilizes membrane filtration
- PWWD #18 contracts for the City of Holton to operate the plant.
- Class IV plant 8 certified operators, 2 class IV, 3 class III and 3 class II
Wastewater Treatment Plan
- Consists of a three cell aerated lagoon system and an aero mod activated sludge plant
- Lagoon system built in 1992
- Capacity 132,000 gallons per day
- Aero Mod Plant built in 2006
- Capacity: 528,000 gallons per day
- 2006 and 2007 KWEA Class III Plant of the Year
- Class III Plant. Four certified operators: 1 Class IV, 1 Class III and 2 Class I
Distribution System
- 30 plus miles of water lines ranging from 2" to 12".
- The majority of the lines are either cast iron or PVC
- Over 100 fire hydrants
Collection System
- 30 plus miles of collection system
- The majority of the system is 8" & 10" with some 15" and 21"
- The system is mostly clay tile with the remainder PVC
- A large percentage of the collection system dates back to 1909
